Canada, Mexico, and the United States are set to start formal talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in August 2017. Buoyed by the popularity of protectionist trade policies during the 2016 election, U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to renegotiate the agreement in order to cut a better deal for Americans. Canadian officials have been quick to highlight the many benefits all North American countries gain under NAFTA, but remain open to negotiation and modernization of the agreement. Trade policies concerning Canadian lumber, dairy, and aerospace technology will likely be points of negotiation during the talks. With increased protectionist sentiment globally, what are the challenges and opportunities for Canada in the creation of a new NAFTA?
